The Perception of a Face Is No More Than the Sum of Its Parts

submitted by mofotlolmkhir 1 year and 1 month ago
When you see a person’s face, how do you go about combining his or her facial features to make a decision about who that person is? Most current theories of face perception assert that the ability to recognize a human face is not simply the result of an independent analysis of individual features, but instead involves a holistic coding of the relationships among features. This coding is thought to enhance people’s ability to recognize a face beyond what would be expected if each feature were shown in isolation. In the study reported here, we explicitly tested this idea by comparing human performance on facial-feature integration with that of an optimal Bayesian integrator. Contrary to the predictions of most current notions of face perception, our findings showed that human observers integrate facial features in a manner that is no better than would be predicted by their ability to use each individual feature when shown in isolation. That is, a face is perceived no better than the sum of its individual parts.

Although impaired social–emotional ability is a hallmark of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the perceptual skills and mediating strategies contributing to the social deficits of autism are not well understood. A perceptual skill that is fundamental to effective social communication is the abili...

Gaze control during face exploration in schizophrenia
submitted by smortyiany 2 years and 9 months ago - Topic: Biology
Patients with schizophrenia perform worse than controls on various face perception tasks. Studies monitoring eye movements have shown reduced scan paths and a lower number of fixations to relevant facial features (eyes, nose, mouth) than to other parts. We examine whether attentional control, thr...

Differences between perception of human faces and body shapes: Evidence from the composite illusion

The present study aimed to investigate whether human body forms – like human faces – undergo holistic processing. Evidence for holistic face processing comes from the face composite effect: two identical top halves of a face are perceived as being different if they are presented with differen...

Perception of age and health is critical in the judgement of attractiveness. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have identified spatially distinct face-selective regions in human cortex. Disrupting perceptual grouping of face parts impairs holistic face processing
submitted by babmellir2059 5 months ago - Topic: Health
Face perception is widely believed to involve integration of facial features into a holistic perceptual unit, but the mechanisms underlying this integration are relatively unknown. We examined whether perceptual grouping cues influence a classic marker of holistic face perception, the “composit...

Holistic processing of unfamiliar faces during social judgments in acquired prosopagnosia

Prosopagnosia, an impairment at individualizing faces classically caused by brain damage, has been linked to a deficit in holistic face processing. Holistic perception of facial information, however, does not only play a pivotal role during face identity judgments but also for judgements of facia...

Strong evidence that faces are perceived holistically/configurally comes from the composite face effect/illusion: identical top halves of a face are perceived as being slightly different if they are aligned with different bottom halves. Contextual grouping cues modulate holistic face perception

Facial features are processed interactively and integrated into a holistic perceptual unit, unlike those within objects, which are processed in a more feature-based manner. This holistic nature of face perception is robust even when discouraged via explicit task instructions. However, it is uncle...
