Gibberellin as a suppressor of lateral dominance and inducer of apical growth in the unifoliate Streptocarpus wendlandii (Gesneriaceae)

submitted by komemoy6 10 months ago
We report on the effects of exogenously applied hormones on the lateral and apical dominance that governs morphogenesis in the unifoliate Streptocarpus wendlandii. In this phenotype, lateral dominance is extreme as the plants only retain a macrocotyledon that develops into a leaf-like phyllomorph by means of a basal meristem and do not show apical growth. Gibberellin applications suppressed the basal meristem activity of the macrocotyledon resulting in an isocotylous seedling with two microcotyledons and caused the formation of a primary phyllomorph, which suggests that the groove meristem, a shoot apical meristem equivalent, is released from apical suppression by the basal meristem. Interestingly, uniconazol, a gibberellin biosynthesis inhibitor, also caused a reduction in basal meristem activity, but without primary phyllomorph formation, suggesting that some gibberellin is required for proper function of the basal meristem. Co-application of gibberellin and cytokinin resulted in two macrocotyl.

Overexpression of Brassica rapaSHI-RELATED SEQUENCE genes suppresses growth and development in Arabidopsis thaliana
submitted by mozinrhl 10 months ago - Topic: Biology
SHI-RELATEDSEQUENCE (SRS) genes are plant-specific transcription factors containing a zinc-binding RING finger motif, which play a critical role in plant growth and development. We have characterized six SRS genes in Brassica rapa. Overexpression of the SRSsBrSTY1, BrSRS7, and BrLRP1 induced dwar...

Dormancy and Flowering Are Regulated by the Reciprocal Interaction Between Cytokinin and Gibberellin in Zantedeschia
submitted by kevoncesek 2 years and 10 months ago - Topic: Agriculture
Floral productivity of Zantedeschia is dependent on the conversion rate of buds to shoots, which is controlled by varying intensities of para- (apical dominance), endo- (dormancy), and ecodormancy. We present evidence of cross-talk between cytokinin and gibberellin in their complementary roles to...

Strigolactone may interact with gibberellin to control apical dominance in pea (Pisum sativum)
submitted by enktvlik 1 year and 11 months ago - Topic: Agriculture
The role of strigolactones as plant growth regulators has been demonstrated through research on biosynthesis and signaling mutant plants and through the use of GR24, a synthetic analog of this class of molecules. Strigolactone mutants show a bushy phenotype and GR24 application inhibits the growt...

'Overgrowth' mutants in barley and wheat: new alleles and phenotypes of the 'Green Revolution' Della gene
submitted by sextast 3 months ago - Topic: Agriculture
A suppressor screen using dwarf mutants of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) led to the isolation of ‘overgrowth’ derivatives, which retained the original dwarfing gene but grew at a faster rate because of a new mutation. The new mutations were in the Slender1 (Sln1) gene (11/13 cases), whi...

Genetic and physiological analysis of biennialism in Hyoscyamus niger
submitted by deviro 2 years and 9 months ago - Topic: Biology
A genetic and physiological study of biennialism in the diploid selfer Hyoscyamus niger (black henbane), an obligate long-day plant, is described. Three annual and two biennial accessions that were homozygous for their respective growth habits were selected. The early-flowering trait of two annua...

Isolation and Identification of an Anti-Bolting Compound, Hexadecatrienoic Acid Monoglyceride, Responsible for Inhibition of Bolting and Maintenance of the Leaf Rosette in Radish Plants
submitted by ontan 2 years and 9 months ago - Topic: Agriculture
Generally, the bolting (stem elongation from rosette plants) of winter annuals is believed to be induced by an increase in the levels of gibberellin that occurs after a certain period of chilling (vernalization), and a deficiency of gibberellin allows the plant to maintain a rosette style. Lack o...

Combining Enhanced Root and Shoot Growth Reveals Cross Talk between Pathways That Control Plant Organ Size in Arabidopsis
submitted by ingen856 2 years and 2 months ago - Topic: Agriculture
Functionally distinct Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) genes that positively affect root or shoot growth when ectopically expressed were combined to explore the feasibility of enhanced biomass production. Enhanced root growth resulting from cytokinin deficiency was obtained by overexpressing CY...

The Arabidopsis SOC1-like genes AGL42, AGL71 and AGL72 promote flowering in the shoot apical and axillary meristems

The floral transition is the switch from vegetative development to flowering. Proper timing of the floral transition is regulated by different pathways and is critical for the reproductive success of plants. Some of the flowering pathways are controlled by environmental signals such as photoperio...

Characterization of grape Gibberellin Insensitive1 mutant alleles in transgenic Arabidopsis

We generated 12 different mutations in the grape Gibberellin Insensitive1 (VvGAI1) sequences, transformed them into Arabidopsis under the control of 35S, Arabidopsis GAI or grape GAI1 promoter, and evaluated the impact of these mutant alleles on plant growth and development. These VvGAI1 sequence...

A key question in plant developmental biology is how cell division and cell differentiation are balanced to modulate organ growth and shape organ size. In recent years, several advances have been made in understanding how this balance is achieved during root development. In theArabidopsisroot mer...
