Factors Influencing Corporate Environmental Protection Activities for Greenhouse Gas Emission Reductions: The Relationship Between Environmental and Financial Performance

submitted by blockhiot 1 year and 9 months ago
This paper analyzes the relationship between a firm’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and its profitability in Japanese manufacturing. Defining the difference between the marginal revenue and cost of reducing GHG emissions as the “net benefit,” which is endogenously characterized by various factors, we estimate a switching regression model where the sign of the net benefit determines the relationship between GHG emissions and profitability. Our empirical analysis focuses on ISO 141 adoption, market competition, uncertainty, financial flexibility, and share ownership structure as the factors, and indicates that firms with low firm-specific uncertainty, high financial flexibility, and a high proportion of large shareholders tend to have a nonnegative net benefit, so that the positive relationship between their GHG emissions and profitability is mitigated. On the other hand, although ISO 141 adoption is generally considered to be an indicator of a firm’s stance on environmental proactiveness, it does not provide a sufficient incentive to reduce emissions. Factors such as uncertainty, financial flexibility, and share ownership structure are more important to GHG emission reductions.

Over the past decade, nine gene therapy clinical trials for Parkinson’s disease (PD) have been initiated and completed. Starting with considerable optimism at the initiation of each trial, none of the programs has yet borne sufficiently robust clinical efficacy or found a clear path toward regulatory approval. Despite the immediately disappointing nature of the efficacy outcomes in thes...

Greenhouse gas emission practices and financial performance
submitted by ormbrajo 1 year and 9 months ago - Topic: Geography
The ambiguous effect of sustainable business practices on business financial performance is explained empirically as the result of the disparity of the practices analyzed, the inadequate relation proposed and the misspecification of the moderating variables. The purpose of the present study is to determine the effect that each of these factors can have as justification for the divergence of out...

submitted by iartigo 1 year and 6 months ago - Topic: Geography
Many Chinese coal mines are highly gassy with abundant coal mine methane occurring in complex geological conditions and emitted as a greenhouse gas into the atmosphere during mining operations. Major accidents due to coal and gas outbursts and gas explosions also frequently occur leading to fatalities and financial losses. Conventional technologies using specialized roadways and extensive short...

Fire, soil fertility and delayed seed release: a community analysis of the degree of serotiny
submitted by ontan 1 year and 7 months ago - Topic: Biology
Delayed seed release (serotiny) is a convergent plant trait in fire-prone regions of the world but explaining the degree of serotiny has remained elusive because of the paucity of community data. Selective forces involving seed predators, fire and soil nutrients have been suggested as factors influencing serotiny. We tested whether protection of seeds and/or synchronized dispersal were associat...
